Part of the closure of the Pfizer Global Manufacturing Facility at Pfizer's Sandwich facility involved the demolition of a manufacturing plant and the restoration to open space. The works included a first phase preliminary ground investigation to determine the site's environmental setting and identify any major areas of contamination resulting from the site's previous and current usage prior to restoration.

A second phase concentrated on the T1-T5 Gas Oil Tank Farm and immediate surrounding area. This was due to elevated levels of high molecular weight organic contamination encountered in the groundwater in this specific area during the phase 1 investigation. Contaminated soils described as oily tarry gravels were also identified during the phase 1 works.

A remediation strategy comprised the removal of all storage tanks and disposal of associated hydrocarbon contaminated soils to a suitably licensed waste management facility. The resultant excavation void was backfilled with uncontaminated inert imported material.
Following the remediation works a closure report was prepared.
