Hubbard's Hill was formerly a chalk quarry located on the North Downs, Kent in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The quarrying activities left a geologically important/significant chalk face, which has since been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

The site was operated as an inert landfill in the1990's. Imported wastes were used to return the landscape to its pre-quarry levels. The chalk face SSSI was however retained.

We were commissioned to surrender the Waste Management Licence to the Environment Agency (EA), who will only accept a surrender if it is considered that the site is unlikely to cause pollution of the environment or harm to human health. Licence surrender was achieved by:

  1. Undertaking a historic review of the landfilling activities;
  2. Liaising with the EA to determine their site specific requirements;
  3. Undertaking landfill gas monitoring;
  4. Undertaking desk based research to determine local hydrogeological regimes,
    followed by water sampling from appropriate local water courses.
