Back Sand Point Landfill, owned and operated by Pfizer Ltd since 1953, was no longer required for the acceptance of wastes. A hydrogeological risk assessment indicated that the site was discharging List II substances to groundwater and the River Stour.

The Environment Agency thus requested the closure and remediation of the site. We were commissioned to undertake the Contract Management and Construction Supervision of the remediation, which entailed:

    1. Preparation of all contract documentation and management of the tendering process;
    2. Re-profiling the site by the importation of engineered soils to achieve acceptable surface water drainage gradients;
    3. Placement of a low permeability cap over the landfilled wastes;
    4. Importation and placement of restoration soils over the cap, with subsequent seeding using indigenous grass species;
    5. Provision of landfill gas and surface water management infrastructure.
